73%  of thieves use the front door to enter a property. Check your front and back doors for any signs of weaknesses. 

Windows are another major entry point. Check that all of your windows have key based window handles and locks. Window restrictors allow you to keep your windows open without the fear of someone breaking in –  and more importantly if you have children it will prevent them from climbing up and falling out of any windows.

If you have recently purchased your home make sure that there are no other existing keys. Change the locks immediately and consider getting keyed alike cylinder locks that will allow you to use one key on all your door locks and security padlocks.

Security lighting is a great way to deter burglars that may strike in the dark. A powerful security light will prompt a burglar to move on to an easier target. Place them above doorways and around corners or blind spots, the higher you place them the more surface area they will cover. PIR motion flood lights are best as they can sense body heat and movement in the dark.

If someone does bypass your security and gets into your home then make sure your belongings aren’t on show. Do not make it easy for the burglar by leaving your prized possessions out on show. Have secret hiding places for your jewellery and electronic goods and think about installing a safe. Burglars will ransack your home looking for cash and anything they can sell so make it hard for them by storing all your valuable items in a sold secure safe, preferably one that can be installed into your wall or floor.

    Thief’s will often target your home with the specific goal of locating your car keys. Get into the habit of doing quick security checks before bed to make sure all your windows and doors are locked and your car keys are in a secure location. Do not leave your car keys near your front door and think about upgrading your letterbox security.
